Am in love with swellca.st, a new site that give people eight day surf conditions forecasts.
Is a beautiful and simple example of combining an interest like surfing with data visualization and superb web UI to create a compelling and useful tool.
I know a lot of ad people don’t like comparative advertisments but I love them especially when they get it so right with copy like this from Jim Beam.
The Story of Keep Calm and Carry On
A short film that tells the story behind the ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ poster. Its origins at the beginning of WWII and its rediscovery in a bookshop in England in 2000, becoming one of the iconic images of the 21st century. Film, music, script and narration by Temujin Doran.
Annoying push notification spam from Linkedin’s app. Short term thinking focused app developers will ruin push notifications as a useful and legitimate prompt for users to interact with your app.
Anything that get’s your blood racing is probably worth doing.
iPhone apps, everyone is doing it!
6th grade student Thomas Suarez who creates apps is a wake up call for anyone over 25 years old that has said if they have a great idea for an app, web site, anything but hasn’t done it yet. NOTE TO SELF: get your act together already and do it! The 6th graders are coming!!!
This How to Stay Safe Survival Guide by men’s fashion brand Jack & Jones is a brilliant example about building a brand around storytelling and video content. It also has a neat buy/info mechanic.
Remember that video of the panda and the kitten playing table tennis that you sent around your WHOLE office but then someone all staff replied that it was a year old? OMG soooooo embarrassing. Is it old? is a site that before you make a fool of yourself when you send a link enter it here to make sure it’s fresh.
How can anyone not like this? Chevy used people’s votes, Facebook likes and Twitter comments to fuel a real world stunt to promote the launch Chevy’s new Sonic compact by making the car go for a bungee jump in real time!
Dulux is allowing people to buy and name each one of the 16.7 million colors found on a regular computer/tablet/smartphone display for a pound each to aid UNICEF.
This State Farm Insurance campaign uses Google street view and a giant robot to demonstrate that you don’t have to be boring to sell insurance and explain to people why they should renew their home insurance policy.
‘tis the future already!!!
Half adorable, half terrifying. To an Infant a magazine is an iPad that does not work.
UK band The Vaccines who I got to see at SXSW this year have released the video for their new single Wetsuit, which uses photographs of music festivals sourced from Instagram where fans were asked to post pictures with the tag #vaccinesvideo to get involved.
The execution is great and shows a simple use of an existing behaviour and platform to source user generated content by providing a focus to do so. Nice work.
The creators of the 6zer0 for iPhone game are offering the first person to complete the game 6% of the game’s profits for life. Awesome use of incentives to purchase the game as well as tell others about it.
I need braaaaaaaains…I mean I need to traaaaaaaain. This Kickstarter concept combines a zombie game + health utility app = Zombies, Run! So clever.
EVERYONE MUST FUND THIS IDEA TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Naked Women + QR Codes
Two things that would NEVER go together right? Well, online retailer Zappos has launched a campaign that lets consumers dress naked models featured in print ads after scanning QR codes from the ad with their smart phone.
I like this extension of the print ads that as well as dressing the models it also entertains people with fictional videos of what happens to the naked women in the ads but goes beyond this by drive people to purchase via the Zappos mobile site.
Perfect Hello Australia moment while travelling. Little Red’s own toilet graffiti at the ‘Aussie BBQ’ venue during South By in Austin, Texas.
2011 was an interesting but tough year for me on a few levels but it was good. It didn’t work out at all as I had originally planned but I am all the better for it.
I quit my job in Brisbane.
I took 3 months off.
I shovelled toxic flood sludge after the Brisbane floods.
I went to SXSW, again. I learned heaps during the interactive conference, again. I loved the music festival, again. I vowed to someday move to Austin, again.
I moved to Sydney.
I explored the city and fell in love with its beaches, culture, size, energy and people.
I did Rocktober, again. I failed to go to 31 gigs in 31 nights, again.
I got a new job in Sydney. Yay!!!
I finally started to collaborate to make ideas and side projects happen.
Am super excited about 2012. Feeling settled in the city now, working with an awesome agency and have a rad group of mates - will be owning next year fo shizz.
Best Saturday morning internet present ever!
Ciara O’Meara just posted a sketch of me! THANK YOU!
@robotcircus is this Fridays #twitollowersketch. Hope you like your sketch Anthony. Have a good weekend!
I arrived in Austin yesterday and already feel like I am home again. It really is one of my favourite places in the world.
Am in town for SXSW. If you are also in Austin be sure to say hello via my Twitter (@robotcircus) and we’ll go have a beer or some ribs.
If you are not at the festival but want to keep up with 5 days of geek updates from SXSW Interactive and 5 days of updates about indie bands from SXSW Music then follow my conference blog Fuck Yeah SXSW.
I’m loving what I am doing right now :)
Indisputable truth in a cartoon on the back of a business card from Hugh MacLeod.
‘tis always fun looking back at what you have liked over the years.
Zooey Deschanel has been using Tumblr for over a week but is not following ANY of my Tumblrs?!?! It’s like she doesn’t love / know me? *sigh*
Just a collection of photos of things that I will totally subject my future kids to.
This is my newest Tumblr. It takes me to 13 15 that I now have. I AM THE NEW TOPHERCHRIS!!!! *hangs head in shame*
Bookshelf Porn is in this month’s Cleo Magazine here in Australia. ‘tis what they love apparently. Though, they also love moccasins, so…
Still, thanks heaps for the mention!
Tim Rogers’ guitar pick. I scored it at the end of the set on my overnight road trip to Toowoomba on Thursday to watch You Am I’s brilliant gig at the Irish Club that only 100 or so other lucky people got to experience.
Totally got caught by our social media guy at work on Friday afternoon getting a little too into the music in my headphones. If only I had a sound proof office.
